this is a great, great read on how mark bittman became a cook. there’s seriously something about a man who cooks (and does it well) for his family.
my favorite bit:
And the crying need to figure out a career while being a responsible husband and father as newly defined in the early…
This is a beautiful article. There were two points that seemed especially...

I’m getting pickier with age. I used to like most everything sweet. Well, okay that’s not even true. I’ve always been a little picky. But as the years pass, I have become more adept at spotting what I’ll like and what I won’t. And I don’t waste my time on the maybes anymore.
Today I’ve already searched two places for chocolate chip cookies. I came up...

Yay, husband!
I love Jesse. I love birthdays. I love chocolate chip cookies. So when Jesse made chocolate chip cookies (plus a 3 course dinner!) for my birthday yesterday, it was just perfect.
And don’t those look delicious?! Well they were. And lucky for me, there are loads of them in my house now. They had the perfect ratio of cookie to chip. The edges were crispy and the middle was soft. They had a...
looks like a soft cookie, was it? How was the chocolate?

Paradis
This cookie almost didn’t make it home for the photo.
I stumbled upon Paradis to Go with the little one yesterday while strolling around Union Square. This cookie was fresh out of the oven and there are few things that can compete with a warm chocolate chip cookie.
It had crispy edges and a soft middle. Mmmmm. The texture was a little cakey but the flavor was good. The staff was super...

Cookie Endorphins?
I realize that cookies are not the ideal post-workout snack but I suppose I don’t fully buy into the whole ‘no pain, no gain’ philosophy. So after today’s workout, I found myself at Ted & Honey, a neighborhood spot where I bought myself a chocolate chip oatmeal cookie.
Yay, Ted & Honey! This cookie has the right amount of salt and great little pockets where...

Columbine Cookie
Some habits cannot be broken.
There’s a little spot in Tribeca called Columbine that I used to frequent for lunch and every visit included a chocolate chip cookie. While in the neighborhood yesterday, I decided to stop into Columbine and could not leave without the requisite chocolate chip cookie (officially known as Sadie’s Soft and Chewy Triple Chocolate Chip Cookie).
YUM. I...

Polka dotted cookie!
How can you not try a cookie that looks like this?
The post Labor Day weather has been great so I took an extra long stroll with my little guy and found myself in Park Slope. I wandered into a little place called the Blue Sky Bakery on 5th Ave and there was this giant polka dotted cookie staring me in the face. I couldn’t resist.
Sadly - this is not the ultimate chocolate chip cookie...
Inside Out?
I love Brooklyn.
Without even leaving my neighborhood I can find an old school butcher, bakeries galore, a cheese store, an independent movie theater, mom and pop shops and a little place called The Chocolate Room. As my son peacefully napped in the stroller this afternoon, I stopped there to satisfy my sweet tooth.
Oh that smell! I would buy Chocolate Room moisturizer if they sold it. I...

Goodbye cookies, hello seafood (for now)
Cape cod isn’t known for chocolate chip cookies and I admit, I’ve been missing them. The days have been chock full of terrific seafood instead and despite the rain, our first vacation as a family of four has been super.
Actually, today I saw a giant homemade chocolate chip cookie at cottage street bakery but I decided not to buy it. When in Rome…
The quest continues after...
The pick-me-up
The 3 o’clock slump is a powerful thing.
In an effort to avoid caffeine after my giant morning mug(s) of coffee, I find myself gravitating toward sweets for an afternoon pick-me-up. Yesterday’s triple whammy - the disgusting humidity, a crying newborn and the regular dose of exhaustion - led me to Ecopolis, an eco-coffee shop in Boerum Hill.
Ecopolis sells chocolate chip...

Date with a Cookie
Meeting new moms is like dating all over again.
I’d like to find neighborhood moms with babies the same age as my son so that he can have his own playgroup and not just tag along with my daughter and her friends. Easier said than done.
So when I met a couple of women with babies between 5 and 7 weeks old, I was excited. It was too humid to sit outside so I proposed meeting at Sweet...
Sweet or Salt?
I used to think that there were two kinds of people in the world: sweet or salt.
I have always been a sweet. I’ve been known to say that I’d give up dinner forever just for some great chocolate chip cookies. My husband is a salt. Over the years I’ve learned that sweet versus salt is not so cut and dry. I’ve discovered that a touch of salt goes a long way - particularly in...
Thank You, New York Times
I’ve been on a cleaning frenzy since the little one was born 7 weeks ago. I guess technically it’s a good riddance frenzy. Funny how we sometimes hold on to things we think we’ll need at some point and years later, they turn up dusty. Today I found a small box with safety pins, a couple issues of Newsweek from 2006 that I wanted to read but never got around to, some t shirts that...

You broke my heart, Bouchon Bakery
I was up at Columbus Circle for my 6 week postpartum visit. Following the visit, I went to the Time Warner Center to Bouchon Bakery for a chocolate chip cookie. I made it a point to get one of these after every prenatal visit. I had a small stockpile in my freezer in preparation for labor day (aka, the day my son was born) but that’s another story.
I like the chocolate chip cookies at Bouchon...

The Quest Begins
Dear New York,
I’m here and I’m hungry. Actually, that’s not even true. I’m not hungry, I just have a yearning for an amazing chocolate chip cookie. I dont mean to start this friendship with a fib but as I think about it, I’m never *really* hungry these days. It’s the damn humidity. What the heck is going on up there in weatherland? I’ve got a newborn and have been cooped up in the house several...
